Just like any home renovation or building project, choosing the right countertops for your kitchen or bathroom can lead to several questions. This is most certainly also the case when your material of choice is natural stone. It is always a good idea to make sure that you know and understand that facts before making a purchase. Take the time to do enough research and you won’t be sorry!
Q: What’s the difference between natural stone and engineered stone?
A: Natural stone has an unmistakably sophisticated and elegant look. It is also extremely durable and every piece is unique. On the other hand, manufactured stone are made from fragments of stone that are bound by resin or an epoxy. Colour is added to these types of stone and, while they have an appealing design, they are not as unique as natural stone varieties since they are mass-produced.
Q: Do I need to seal natural stone?
A: Natural stone is naturally porous. Some more than others and sealing is recommended in most cases (depending on the finish). Some polished surfaces might not need to be sealed while others desperately require it. Remember that sealing does not make your stone immune to stains! It simply forms a barrier so that stains can’t take hold quite as easily. You still need to wipe up a spill immediately.
Q: Can my natural stone worktops break?
A: Natural stone is tough and durable but not indestructible. Some types of natural stone are tougher than others and there are different grades too. The type of stone you choose will determine how resistant it is. Most stone surfaces can be stained, scratched and even chipped if they aren’t treated properly. Use cutting boards, don’t place hot pots and pans directly on the stone and exercise some care and caution to keep your stone looking great. If the surface is damaged, you might be able to repair it yourself or you can call in a professional.
