Protect your stone worktops from etching

When you install beautiful, new stone worktops, you want to make sure that they stay as beautiful as possible. Etching is a common problem that can easily be prevented if you take the necessary precautions.

The first thing that you want to do is make sure that you never use harmful cleaning substances like bleach or ammonia on your worktops. These harsh chemicals will damage your worktops and leave a noticeable dull mark behind.

Other substances that will cause etching include vinegar, juice, coffee, wine, cola, salad dressings, tomato juice and sauce as well as various types of fruit. If you are cooking with these items, make sure that you use a chopping board. If you spill, wipe up the spill right away to prevent etching.

The second important tip to remember is that stone is porous and needs to be sealed. This seal is not permanent and will need to be reapplied regularly. You can test your surfaces with a little bit of water. If the water beads on the surface, the seal is still doing its job. If not, you should reseal as soon as possible.
