How to look after your granite worktops

Granite worktops can completely transform your entire home. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing but they are also durable and will add value to your home in more ways than one. With this fantastic value for money, it’s understandable that you should wish to care for your fine worktops as best you can. In order to make the most of your granite worktops, make sure to follow the care tips below.

Daily cleaning should be done with a soft cloth, warm water and a stone friendly cleaner. Never use harsh chemicals like bleach or abrasive cleaners or cleaning materials. Clean up spills immediately to prevent them from taking hold and make sure that you always use a chopping board or block. Never cut or prepare food directly on your granite surfaces.

Preventions is better than cure so, as soon as your granite worktops are installed, make sure that they are professionally sealed to prevent substances from penetrating. You may need to reseal from time to time.

Although granite is tough and durable, if you place a hot pot or pan on these surfaces, it can easily cause discolouration which cannot be removed. Place hot items on wooden blocks or temperature resistant mats.

If you place ceramic or other items on your worktops, make sure that you use a mat underneath them to prevent scratching. Metal objects that could rust should also be placed on mats to prevent rust stains.

If your surface does become scratched or stained, it is best to seek the professional advice of an expert before attempting to repair the area yourself. Only use recommended products and, if need be, have the pros handle the repair job for you.
