Cleaning Tips for Different Stone Surfaces

Different types of stone worktops require varying degrees of care. If you are not sure how you can best take care of your surfaces, here are some cleaning tips for granite, quartz and marble worktops throughout your home.

Granite surfaces

Keep your granite worktops clean by cleaning daily with a mild mixture of dish washing liquid and water. You can make a mixture and apply it using a spray bottle. Wipe down your worktops after food preparation and always use a soft cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners and never cut directly on these surfaces. If your surfaces become stained, for whatever reason, you can use a commercial stone poultice or use as per the instructions. Remember to re-seal your granite worktops regularly to protect them.

Marble worktops

Wipe up any spills right away and make sure that you re-seal your marble worktops regularly. Always use mild dish detergent when cleaning as well as a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive or harsh chemicals. To remove stains, you can make a paste consisting of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Apply to the area and allow to dry before you wipe it away. You may need to repeat this for deeper stains. If your marble becomes etched, it might need to be polished and resealed to remove this type of damage.

Quartz countertops

You do not need to seal these quartz countertop surfaces because they are made from a mixture of quartz and resin. Clean regularly using a glass cleaner or other household cleaner. Just be sure not to use anything abrasive or particularly harsh. Stains are usually not a problem but you should always protect these surfaces regardless. Something like a permanent marker can ruin your worktops.

As you can see, each type of stone has its own strengths and weaknesses. By understanding and keeping them in mind, you will be able to best maintain these surfaces so that you can keep them looking beautiful for many years.
