How big should my kitchen island be?

A kitchen island is a stylish and extremely practical addition to this important part of your home. The island can be used for a number of purposes including preparing food and serving food. You can even enjoy the company of a family member while you prepare dinner. Additional storage below the worktop is another benefit of adding an island. That said, many people wonder just how big or small their kitchen island should be.

Traffic Flow

One of the main concerns is how your kitchen island will affect the flow of traffic in the kitchen. You do not want to make it difficult to move around just for the sake of more worktop space. If you are planning on placing seating around the island, you need to make sure that you can still move around the island even when people are seated around it. If your kitchen is particularly small, an island might not be suitable. A possible alternative would be to convert your kitchen to an open plan one. You can place some chairs on the other side of one of your worktops to allow space for enjoying meals or for somebody to keep you company while you cook.

Stone Worktop Seams

Another concern is that of seams. Natural stone slabs are available in various sizes but, if your island is particularly large, there might be a seam or two. If this bothers you, then you might need to opt for a smaller island. If it is not of any concern, then you can design your island according tot the style and size of your kitchen.

Your budget will not only determine the type of stone you use for your kitchen island worktop. It will also help you choose the appropriate size. The larger the stone worktop, the higher the price. Of course, it’s important to remember that stone worktops are an investment and they will help increase the overall value of your property.

If you are still not sure about the best kitchen island option for your home, it’s best to discuss options with a natural stone worktop expert and even an interior design professional too. They can help you come up with the best solutions to suit your needs.
